Public Space Redesign for Social Impact
Date
2021
Location
Turkey
As part of the Sağlıklı Nesiller (Healthy Generations) initiative by Balık Eve Gel, this project involved the complete renovation of a deteriorating public primary school toilet block in rural Turkey. The aim was simple yet profound: to transform a neglected and unhygienic facility into a safe, clean, and inviting environment for children reinforcing the vital link between sanitation, dignity, and education.
Before the renovation, the space was dark, poorly ventilated, and visibly worn. Cracked tiles, broken cubicles, and unsanitary conditions contributed to discomfort and disuse.
The redesign strategy focused on maximising light, safety, and hygiene, all within a highly constrained budget. A new polycarbonate roof was installed to flood the interior with natural light, replacing the formerly dim atmosphere with a bright, uplifting environment. Brand new toilet cubicles, sinks, and fixtures were introduced alongside modern sanitaryware selected for both durability and ease of maintenance.
Walls and floors were re-tiled with hygienic, easy-to-clean finishes including non-slip flooring, and the interior walls were painted in a light-reflective tone to enhance visibility and cleanliness. The new layout and aesthetic not only elevated the physical environment but also encouraged responsible use, reducing vandalism and promoting positive hygiene behaviours among pupils.
This small-scale intervention had a large impact by turning one of the school’s most overlooked spaces into one of its most cared-for, with long-lasting effects on student health in place.
